social media and parenting on prisonworld blogtalkThree Tips on How to Parent in the Digital Age avoiding Pimps, Players and the Prison Pipeline

Technology is ever evolving and of all of the generations that seems to be gadget geeks and in tune with everything social is the teeny boppers of the now generation. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare, entertains traffic from teens from all over the world. Smart phones, laptops and netbooks have become a parents’ worst nightmare.

Rufus and Jenny Triplett are motivational speakers that tour and speak to middle and high schools, DRUG COURTS, juvenile facilities, group homes, families in crisis, and non-profit organizations alike about the teen experience and the importance of making better decisions. Parents are invited to these presentations as tips are given on how to have less confusion in the home and get through the teen aged years without murdering their children.

Parenting will not be the same in a single parent household versus a two-parent household. Proper monitoring can be done in any household if the rules are set and monitored. Parents should never have any excuses as to ensuring the well-being of their children. These three basic how to’s could save a family from unnecessary headaches and heartaches:

  • Parents should monitor computer access. Computers should be in a central location in the home where the screen can be visible at all times. Privacy is a privilege and not a right.
  • Parents should have all passwords to social and email accounts. There should never be a time when a parent does not know that their child is sexting, being cyberbullied, doing drugs or being sexually active. Sporadic checks of accounts are warranted.
  • Parents should monitor relationships with family members, friends, and casual contacts (i.e. coaches, teachers, tutors, babysitters, etc.) Most often times inappropriate relationship comes from trusted individuals.

Child molesters, prostitution rings, and sugar daddies are around every corner. A less than aggressive style of parenting allows these predators to gather their victims easily. Parents are for guidance and protection. The best way to accomplish either is communication. Establishing rules are not always an easy task, but if the rules come with understanding, the lessons might not be learned the hard way.
