The Menendez Brothers – Where are they Now?
23 years ago the Menendez Brothers, known as Lyle (then 21) and Erik (then 18), brutally murdered their parents in a deadly gun slaying from their family den. The atrocious murders and then the subsequent trials led to a huge public and media frenzy as the world watched the fate’s of the Menendez Brothers play out on Court TV, the first publicly broadcasted trial in history. The first trail for the brothers led to a deadlock by the jury with the members of the jury unable to decide whether the murders of the Menendez’s parent’s was outright murder or manslaughter after startling revelations from the defense that the Menendez Brothers were physically and sexually abused throughout their childhood. However, in the second trial for the Menendez Brothers the jury was able to come to a unanimous decision of two-counts of murder in the first-degree for each brother as well as conspiracy to commit murder. The Menendez Brothers were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In July of 1996 Lyle married his longtime pen pal Anna Eriksson, a former model, and the married lasted for only a year when Eriksson learned that Lyle Menendez was “cheating” on her by writing another woman. Nine years later in 2003 Lyle married his current wife Rebecca Sneed, a magazine editor who he had reportedly known for ten years prior to their wedding.
For Erik married Tammi Ruth Saccoman in a simple wedding ceremony within the prison waiting room. Saccoman in the years since has publicly talked about her relationship and marriage to Erik Menendez in the 2005 book They Said We’d Never Make It – My Life with Erik Menendez and in the 2010 A&E documentary “Mrs. Menendez.” Erik has been a fairly model prisoner, leading prayer groups, working with prison officials to create programs for rewarding good behavior of prisoners and so forth. He told People Magazine in 2005 “I would give my life to change it,” he says. “I talk to my mom. She knows my heart. I ask for forgiveness.”
The Menendez Brothers have certainly garnered attention throughout their trials and subsequent lives in prison with the sensationalist murders of their parents in 1989. For the brothers, life since then has been fairly quiet all things considered and looks to be just the same for the rest of their lives as they continue on with their prison sentence of life without parole.

Ken….do not believe these greedy brothers cover story of child abuse. They confessed in detail about the deaths. Not from police interrogation but from a doctor whom they felt safe to confess. Thinking the privacy of doctor/client privilege they told the tale. If not fir the girlfriend of the doctor being of this the truth would never be exposed. Lyle was ordered to attend counseling with this doctor following arrest for breaking/entering. What do young wealthy men need by burglarizing a home but the same greed that led to this sad case. Do not count them among the many TRUE victims of child abuse. They played a great role in court. It sickens me that they have been allowed marriage and privilege in jail. They parents stuck down for greed. One day they would have been given to them. They just wanted it before the lives of the parents ending naturally. Beware of those who come in sheep’s clothing for their intentions are hidden well. They never purchased a grave marker for the parents before spending millions on rolled watches porch cars, jeeps, oh ya a chicken wing restaurant in N.J.

I listened to what you said, I agree, but there is still that little doubt on my part. I just feel for them because I was abused but just chose to run away at an early age. I didnt care about money then or now. I never believed money was the main ingredient for happiness.
I believe that they should rot in hell for what they did. They deserve to be put to death. Maybe they deserve that they should be set free, but nothing can bring back their parents. I do not know if they have any regrets for doing what they did or not. But they sure need to pay for what they have done. They can spend the rest of their lives in prison, but it won’t bring back the lost.
Ken please don’t fall for their stories of child abuse and rape. Those guys may have had a tough father but if things were so doggone bad, they could have left. I am sorry you were abused…I and my siblings were also abused but we certainly never thought to resort to killing. Besides, the tales of rape were just that. Tall Tales…all lies. If that doesn’t show you what cold blooded killers those two are nothing will. By the way Lyle has stated he has spoken to his mother recently and she understands. He claims he deserves to be released and he will never kill again. Funny coming from a guy who killed his mother with a shotgun. I do believe abuse did go on in the home.A kid doesn’t just start to break in peoples homes for no reason especially a rich one.They are in prison for life so what would they ever lose by saying they were sexually abused if they weren’t??Sexual abuse damages children in ways beyond belief.It is theer fault for the way they both delt with all that rage thwy felt towards their parents.

The movie aired on tv today and it disgusted me all over again, the nerve of them, I don’t believe their story of abuse at all and like rosie said they were of age and if things were that bad they could have left. I think it was terrible what they did to their parents. Now can only be judged by god. May god have mercy on their souls. Cause they will never leave jail. A mother who enables an abusive father to the point where all her children rely on psychologists to cope with the abuse is herself complicit in the abuse. I don’t believe the boys were abused sexually, but I do believe they were verbally abused and felt no other way out.
No one has ever challenged the established moral turpitude of Mr. and Mrs. Menendez.

I’m the same age as Lyle and I always found the Menendez case fascinating. Like Jose I am a CPA. I’m sure he was a smart and competent guy but I can assure you that no accountant rises so fast in the corporate world without being ruthless. I have no doubt the man clawed and scratched himself to a million dollar salary. I would bet that the traits that made him such a success in the business world probably made him a lousy father.
He might have been a psychologically abusive parent but I believe the brothers’ claims of sexual abuse was complete nonsense. Even if their claims of sexual abuse was true they could have simply left home. Both Lyle and Erik impress me as two guys who were rich and arrogant losers and were not very bright. Both had criminal records even before the murders they committed – but Jose pulled strings for them. Ironically, had their rich dad not hired an expensive lawyer to keep them out of jail they would not have had the opportunity to kill him.
I’m sure they knew they would never be the success their dad was. The only way they could ever be successful was to kill their parents and live off their wealth. I have no pity for these two dopes now spending their lives in jail.

This is what I always find hard to understand; if someone’s abusing you, then strive to get free from them and break the ties with the one abusing you and leave them!
The double whammy comes into play when the one abused becomes the abuser.. turning round and killing. Its usually bcs they suffered so long and so much that their resentment towards the abuser escalated so high through hatred that they began wanting to murder. It is so important – CRUCIAL – to have the wisdom that forgiveness is a tool which always helps the one that is abused. To try and strive to forgive and see the solution of breaking ties and leaving as the only way. not murdering.
Thank you Oprah thank you all pastors and churches for teaching forgiveness. Without this tool people that go through long term abuse situations get warped in their minds or hearts and enter a dead end street so to speak in their structure and see it blindly as the only way out. until you are in an abusive situation with a family membber or and spouse, you are inadequate to pass any judgement.If it were that easy to leave an abuser, whether a parent or spouse, there would be a lot less of these tragedies. What you are failing to understand, is these abusers have so much power of the victim, they feel real fear. It would be nice if everybody had the strength you seem to, however, I am betting you have never had someone in your life that verbally and physically abused you. And if so, then good for you for just leaving, it would be nice if you would start a campaign to teach victims to do what you are able to do. Abusers like Jose was are extremely intelligence and know how to manipulate, and convince the victim they are unworthy. They are masters, and it is the most horrible thing to have to go through. Notice when they shot their parents, the number of times they pulled the trigger. That is typical when an abused victim is made to feel helpless, and then all of a sudden they feel for the first time they have power. It’s emotions of anger, fear, and hatred surfacing, and it is genuine passion. Sure, I bet they could have left, but would that have been a death sentence for them, or an adult life of being manipulated..Crime is not the answer, I agree.You could do a little research on the subject and find out more specifics. I find it odd that in the first trial the two juries were deadlocked for weeks. But in the second trial, the verdicts came back unanimous for both. Is it possible the second jury wasn’t completely impartial in it’s deliberations because the jury pool was more tainted with opinion? By the time the first trial ended, would it have been as possible to find an impartial jury?

My step father was very abusive to me although I am allergic to conflict and hurting anyone it is beyond me.However if I think of hurting someone my stepfather does comes to my mind. Therefore I completely understand the Menandez Brother’s. I think it is wrong that they have received life in prison, given it has been documented that kids that are severely abused by their parents are most likely to kill their abusers meaning mom or dad. Actually,It was the first jury that was tainted. Leslie Abramson played to the women in the jury in the first trial. she even had just the women jurors to hr home for a dinner party in their honor. She made the tow murderers dress like school boys, while one saw 25 and the other 22. She sat beside Eric and did motherly things like pick lint off his sweater and hold him when he shed his crocodile tears. She also played to the women’s sympathy, telling them unproven testimony about sexual assault by his father. The first trial was a sham and played to the TV cameras. James, you evidently have no idea what these young men went through up to the time they killed their “parents”. The father was a SADISTIC MONSTER who even stuck pins into one of the son’s thighs to “toughen” him; he also had sex with Lyle while they would shower together.
The cousin testified that once when Lyle was a younger boy he had asked him if it were normal for a father to shower with his son.
I read extensively on these people and watched the entire 2 trials; the second one was a travesty: the boys were not permitted to have any testimony entered re the abuse they’d suffered.
All Jose Menendez family members who testified defended the boys in court. Again, the father was a sadistic monster and the mother slept with one of the boys because he resembled his father who was not exactly the model husband, either.
Like any abused child, Erik defended his mother- said that it was his fault that his mother had sex with him.
I believe Lyle did become dangerous- but after such treatment it is amazing that either one of these men has retained his sanity.
Erik should not be in prison; I have no idea whether or not Lyle is dangerous but post-traumatic stress sydrome would be very understandable.
Did they want their parents’ money? That’s about the only thing that would have been of any value to them as far as the father’s “value” was concerned.
I believe the father was a sociopath- maybe even a psychopath. That fiend even one time made his younger son swing from a chandelier which was affixed to a high ceiling- he was trying to make him more of a man; he was about somewhere between 12 and 14 at the time if I remember.
The father should have been sent to prison for life; the mother was a disaster area- a victim as the boys were.

BTW, once the boys broke into their other house in Malibu- wanted to steal whatever. They were caught and the father lambasted them NOT because they had stolen BUT BECAUSE THEY GOT CAUGHT!
Their life sentences are a travesty- and that judge is going to face a bigger Judge one day, for not allowing the testimony that would have caused again a hung jury, if not acquittal. The DA will also have to answer.
Erik should never have had to go to prison, but Lyle as I said seems to have had sufficient problems that merely freeing him at the time could have been a mistake. Difficult situation.
At any rate the sentence was way harsher than it ever should have been; the judge damned well knew what these boys had been through, even if it weren’t presented at the second trial.
Also, the father had told Erik that sex between men was a good thing and mentioned that this had been the custom of the Roman soldiers to bring them closer to each other.
Kim, actually I do condone what they didl I agree about Erik. I am 75 and researched for a long time- and watched every moment of the trial, They didn’t kill “parents”- they killed a male virus and its terribly fouled-up mate.
I am a caring Christian, and a vegetarian; even my dog is; I am against the death penalty and am anything but violent but this had to be one of the worst cases of child abuse in the history of our state.

Greg- in the first trial, they were allowed to present the abuse they’d suffered as children and up to the time they killed their parents. The second trial was different; this information was withheld and so the trial was a joke. Without the background it looked, indeed, as if the boys were merciless killers wanting their parents’ money.
I listened to every word of the 2 trials- and some things the boys said- they way they put things- made it obvious to me that they were telling the truth. I wish I could remember the 2 sentences that to me proved that they weren’t lying. It was screamingly obvious, I am 75 and 1989 was a long time ago so what they said escapes me now but, again, the sentences would barely have been noticed as to the nuances by most people.

One sentence I do remember that gave me a clue as to their being frightened; after their mother was wounded, she tried to get away- crawling around the coffee table; they way Erik put it, she was SNEAKING around the table; does that give you an idea as to how he viewed the situation? He hardly contrived that way of expressing what had happened.
I think it was Erik, however, who even though his mother had slept with him, blamed himself; think he was also the one who said they killed their mother mainly because they felt she couldn’t live without her husband; psychopath and wife. They honestly felt they were doing her a favor. Sick, yes, but this was a horribly dysfunctional family.
And re the thefts? Let’s remember that Jose Menendez was upset with them for one reason- that they’d been caught!

Lyle was turned into what he became; the two boys’ lives were a tragedy for which all the money in the world wouldn’t compensate.
I’ve lived in a house next door to a family similar to the Menendez’- tennis and all, The father was a tyrant- but nowhere as bad as Jose- the mother took everything- similar to Kitty. Now it’s highly unlikely there was any sexual abuse but you could see the boys’ rebellion in shooting at birds, and becoming drug addicts. The father was totally disrespectful to his wife, even with company and cheated on her. They’ve both dead now- she died at 42 and he around 50.
The father in a way even tried to bully mel I didn’t want the pesticides they were spraying to get into my yard but he persisted in doing what he was doing. He ordered his wife around and insisted the boys play tennis, even though the youngest of the 3 hated it. And I watched the youngest go from a sweet, loving boy to what the older boys were; the father wasn’t in to any form of gentleness and neither were they. The mother was from Italy and her parents sided with the husband because he was also (American) Italian and was supposed to be the head of the house. The mother wound up with colitis which morphed into cancer and killed her.
Jose Menendez, however, made this father look like Ward Cleaver in comparison- and he was pretty darn bad.
Saronne- I registered just to agree with you. If you watched the entire first trial…you get it. They had the battered women’s defense times 50. they were infants, and both their parents psychopaths, and they really saw no way out.
They could have moved out of their parents’ home. They were adults when they murdered them – remember? They were definitely not infants. And as for the abuse, the court had their word for it – that’s it. I watched the trial and was extremely skeptical of their stories. The little spending spree they went on after they murdered their parents did very little for their credibility.
Melissa, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Finally, someone that looks at this tragic case with sensitivity, empathy, and compassion. So many people have that mob mentality towards these guys, but I firmly believe that they endured some kind of severe abuse for them to do what they did, and it is unfortunate that most people cannot see things from their perspective and have an understanding of how horrible abuse is, and how immense the psychological hold is that abusers have over their victims.
They truly do manipulate and emotionally blackmail their victims and exert complete control over them, to the point where an abusive parent/child relationship never develops in a way that a normal parent/child relationship does. When kids are abused, it doesn’t matter how old they get, they will always see their parents as having the authority to control them, and the parents will always see the kids as their property, to be manipulated and controlled. Therefore it didn’t matter that Erik and Lyle were “grown-ups”, it wouldn’t have matter even if they were middle-aged men in their 40s or 50s, they would have still been deeply afraid of their parents, and their parents would have still been holding complete control of their lives.
It’s the result of a parent/child relationship that is built on fear, control, and manipulation instead of caring, acceptance and love. The situation and emotions involved are so complex, with the kids desperately wanting to please their parents and seeking approval and acceptance from them, while on the other hand, feeling an immense anger and resentment towards their parents for all the pain they put them through. Then combine this with the feelings of hurt and helplessness, and fear they have, and you get exactly what happened. The Menendez brothers, two people with absolutely no violent tendencies, suddenly reaching a breaking point one night and shooting their parents multiple times. This is exactly what happens when victims who have felt weak and helpless all their lives suddenly find themselves with the power to finally stand up to their abusers for the first time in their lives. It is a culmination of all those strong emotions combining and all coming to the surface in such a devastating way.
They truly feared their parents, and felt there was no way out. What they did was a bad choice, it as not the right thing to do, and they should have found the strength and courage to find another way out, because violence is never the answer. Both of them realize this now, that what they did solved nothing, but at the time, and for years after the murder, they truly believed it was the only way out because their minds were so clouded by all the fear, resentment, anger, hurt, and pain they had. If you have been abused and found the courage to leave and never look back, then more power to you, and it would be great if you can help other people do the same, instead of resorting to the tragic choice these two brothers made. The entire story is a tragedy, and the second trial was unfair. The brothers just got out of one prison only to spend the rest of their lives in another, even worse prison, it’s terribly tragic, and the only thing that can be done now is learn from this and help others who are in similar situations before it’s too late.
They were never sexually abused by their parents. That was a big, despicable lie made up by their lawyers. The lawyers had originally been betting everything on the confession tapes being ruled inadmissible. When the court ruled them admissible, Abramson and the rest of the defense team had to scramble to come up with something and so they concocted the sexual abuse b.s. This is why it was so clear that it was rehearsed, as their lawyers told them exactly what to say and how to act. That’s why the details were so over-the-top and why they had never mentioned anything about sexual abuse before.
When they confessed in great length and detail to their therapist, they told the real reason they killed their parents, because they hated their controlling father and they resented their mother for always taking his side. There was absolutely nothing about sexual abuse. Then after their arrest, for four years still nothing. Then out of the blue it’s all they talk about it in the trial…it’s clear their lawyers put them up to it and they went right along with it. They even read numerous books on child molestation to come up with the details and told certain relatives (two cousins who were the only ones that gave any testimony about alleged sexual abuse) what to say, and spent every night chatting with each other on the phone in jail, carefully planning what they were going to say in court. Their attorneys coached them and rehearsed it thoroughly, it was all completely calculated and bogus.
There was no sexual abuse, period, and it was so desperate and despicable that they went on national television and lied like that. However, they did have real reason to hate their father. He was a narcissistic tyrant who controlled every aspect of their lives and constantly belittled and demeaned them, even in public. They got sick and tired of him telling them they were not good enough and that they were not worthy of being his sons. The abuse they went through was emotional abuse. Their parents constantly said hurtful things to them, that part is true. They were not allowed to have a happy normal childhood because their parents had insane demands and were impossible to please.
They were the type of parents who didn’t understand that their kids are not their property, but individual human beings with their own feelings. Jose wanted his kids to be copies of himself, and was disappointed when he got Lyle and Erik, who were shy, quiet, sensitive, and emotional human beings. He constantly told them they were worthless and made that deeply hurt them and affected them, perhaps more than it would have affected other people, but different people have varying levels of sensitivity. Kitty and Jose were no contenders for parents of the year awards. I believe Erik when he said that his mother would say hurtful things to him like “why don’t you find a girlfriend? Are you gay? Are you not man enough?” and when she told both him and Lyle that she wished they were never born because they ruined her marriage. It is clear that these boys didn’t kill for the money, they killed out of deep anger and resentment of their parents. The money was just a bonus. They hated their parents, and they had reason to, but what they did was wrong, and although Jose and Kitty were awful parents they certainly did not deserve to be brutally murdered in their own house by their own kids.
I understand that some people don’t have the strength and resilience to overcome their upbringing and having bad parents, and I understand and believe them when they said they were afraid of their parents. I don’t believe that they were afraid of imminent danger that their parents would kill them that night, obviously. But they had a general fear and dread of their parents, because in emotionally abusive relationships, especially when the abuser is a parent, there is an immense psychological hold. They killed their parents because they felt a myriad of emotions towards them.
Their tears were real but not because they were recalling sexual abuse, but because they were remembering the hurtful things their parents said, the psychological abuse, and they also were hit by the gravity of the situation…that they had committed murder and there was a real possibility that they would go to prison and lose their lives of luxury. I can sympathize with them because I know what emotionally abusive parents are like. But I lose some sympathy for them because they lied so much…and they will never tell the truth about what the real trigger was that caused them to go out and buy the guns and make the plans to kill their parents. They have a secret that they are still keeping between them that not even their lawyers knew about, but we will never know what that is because they will never be truthful about it. It is despicable that they lied so much in court, in front of juries, cameras, and audience.
I know it was their lawyers that put them up to it, but still they chose to go along with it instead of just sticking to the truth…yes they were severely emotionally abused. But they lost a lot of sympathy by lying about being sexually abused and then continuing to lie about it even now, 22 years after they first lied at the trial. As for their prison sentences, yes I feel life in prison with no parole is too harsh. But in the eyes of the law, what they did was in fact premeditated murder. It was not a spur of the moment heat of passion type thing. It was calculated, and carefully planned ahead of time, and they knew exactly what they were doing and how to cover it up afterwards. That is the definition of premeditated murder and why it cannot be voluntary manslaughter. The bottom line is that these boys killed neither out of simple greed because they were just a couple of spoiled brats like the prosecution claimed, nor because they were sexually abused. They killed because they deeply resented their parents and normal kids don’t resent their parents for no reason…they had real and legit reasons to feel so much anger towards their parents.
It doesn’t justify what they did, but the truth about this story has been swept under the rug. Everyone seems to be divided into camps, the came that believes the inane, absurd sexual abuse story, and then the other camp that believes they were just spoiled little rich boys who couldn’t wait to get their hands on daddy’s money. I believe both camps have it wrong, and the real reason they killed their parents is what they confessed to Dr. Oziel months prior to their arrest…that’s the closest thing to the full truth and nothing but the truth that these boys will ever say in this life. As to what the real trigger was that caused them to carry out the plan to kill their parents that particular week…that too is something these boys are never going to tell the truth about.
Good points. I believe Jose was a terrible father, and Kitty was weak-willed mother who worshiped her husband and took out her own unhappiness on her kids. But neither Jose and Kitty were incestuous pedophiles/rapists. What a horrible and disgusting story the defense team came up with, all for shock value and out of desperation after they couldn’t stop the confession tapes from being heard in court, and shame on Erik and Lyle for going along with that and becoming the world-class liars. But I do believe and have always believed that their parents were crappy parents who didn’t treat them with love, kindness, and caring, instead they made them feel worthless and belittled them from the time they were small children up till the same week of the murder. There was a lot of emotional and psychological abuse, and that’s why the boys started acting out (like doing the burglaries). It’s very sad that these boys had to go through that, as someone who went through a similar situation, I can understand, but it doesn’t justify riddling your parents with bullets after ambushing them in their own home while they’re sleeping. The irony is that if Jose and Kitty had not treated their sons like big disappointments then the sons wouldn’t have become the big disappointments that they turned out to be.
John Smith, I completely agree. This is what I’ve always believed to be the truth about this case as well. They were never sexually abused, that is why they had never mentioned anything remotely of the sort before. They confessed in great detail to their therapist Dr. Oziel, told him exactly why they hated their father, and never mentioned any sort of sexual abuse. Then after their arrest, for three years, still nothing about sexual abuse whatsoever. Then all of a sudden, the court rules that the confession tapes can be heard by the jury, and the defense team’s strategy is gone out the window. The entire defense was going to be about how the boys didn’t commit the murder, how it was some mafia hit, how the real killers were still walking around (similar to OJ defense) but with the admission of the Oziel tapes, that went out the window, as the boys clearly admitted that they had killed their parents. So the lawyers had to come up with a fast plan and they chose to go with the false sexual abuse story to make the parents look so disgusting that no one would care they were murdered.
It was never Erik and Lyle’s idea to lie and say their father molested them. It was entirely Leslie Abramson’s idea, and she orchestrated the entire thing. That’s why everything they said at the trial was so strikingly similar to a certain book about sexual abuse. Abramson had them read that book while in jail and that’s where they got all the details from. That’s why it was so obvious by how absurd and over-the-top their testimony sounded that there was no way this could have happened to them and they were simply repeating second-hand information they’d studied. Abramson was their director, and they were her lead actors. But it was not their idea, granted they are at fault for going along with that entire lie though. Their lawyers probably told them it was their only chance at an acquittal, so they went along with it.
The emotional and psychological abuse though, was very real and completely true. Their father was domineering tyrant who constantly belittled them and took away all their confidence from a young age. They truly were afraid of him, and they were also completely dependent upon him. They did not know how to be independent and live on their own. He used his wealth and influence to control them. Their mother not only enabled the father but participated in the emotional abuse too. She worshiped her husband even though he cheated on her with other women, because she was financially dependent upon him and her identity was too wrapped up in him. She said many hurtful things to her kids, and their dad was a bully who constantly made fun of them and said very cruel hurtful things as well. This is why they had such a deep anger and hatred for him. All their lives they tried to please him but they never could, because he had impossible demands and expectations.
He was a narcissist who wanted his kids to be just like him, and saw them as huge disappointments because they weren’t. He didn’t understand that they are individual human beings and not just his trophies that he can control and dictate their lives and destinies. Eventually, the boys started acting out as rebellion towards their father. Hence they committed the burglaries and ran him out of Calabasas. They also were very good and deception and manipulation because this is the way he taught them. That is why they are such good liars, and put on such a big performance in court.
Also people tend to think that because Lyle was the older one, he was the one who was more calculating and manipulative, but the prosecutors disagreed. They felt that it was actually Erik, although he is the more emotional one, who is the smarter, more calculating and more manipulative one. They believe a lot of what happened that led to the murder was actually instigated by Erik. There was no mastermind in this crime, as it was both brothers who conspired and plotted together equally, and both felt the exact same way about their parents, but I think the prosecutors are right about Erik that he’s even more manipulative than his brother, no surprise he suckered in that attention-seeking Tammi woman.
There’s also one more thing about this case…what was the catalyst for the murder? Why did they choose to do it at that time (August ’89) and not later…there was certainly an event that must have triggered it. Of course the alleged catalyst that their defense attorneys told them to say, that ridiculous toupee and Erik being molested by daddy story is a complete lie. But there was a real catalyst, one these boys will never be truthful about. Dominck Dunne had the theory that the real catalyst was the father discovering that Erik was gay the week before the murder, he subsequently became irate, saying cruel horrible things to him and even threatening him, and that’s what led up to the boys deciding to kill their parents. I don’t know if Erik is really gay or not, but I think Dunne was on to something there. And my theory is close to his, that although Erik might not have been gay, Jose accused him of being gay and believed it about him even if it weren’t true, and that led to a huge fight the boys had with their parents, and started the chain of events that led to the murder several days later.

These guys are both right where they belong, and it’s a good thing they did not get the death penalty, because then after 10 or 15 years in prison, they would have just been given a quick death. It is far better punishment that they are locked up in prison hell for the rest of their lives, wearing those ugly prison clothes, and using dirty toilets and prison showers and nothing but an old cheap bar of soap, as every day they live without any privacy, freedom, or dignity till they grow old and die. It’s a far cry from the life of comfort and luxury they once had with their country club afternoons and their nice clothes, the fancy houses and cars, the expensive fragrance, and all the other privileges they had. It is truly the best punishment for this life that all that be taken away for them and that they live in squalor in prison in now. These two don’t deserve anyone’s sympathy, and it’s sickening how many people have been suckered in by all their blatant lies. If you want to have sympathy and compassion, have it for Jose and Kitty…they are the only victims in this case. I don’t believe for a second that these two idiots were sexually abused or that anyone laid an hand on them. It’s all an ugly pile of bs. What horrible, disgusting lies concocted by that sociopath Leslie Abramson, it was a desperate move on her part because she had been counting on the confession tapes being inadmissible. The entire first trial was a sham, full of perjury. I can’t believe so many people actually fell for that crap, it’s so clear the brothers were lying through their teeth. These two idiots not only murdered their parents, but then they treated their parents like filth by flushing their characters down the toilet, they murdered them over and over again with their shameless slander and horrible lies in front of an entire nation. That is how evil and malicious they are. Jose Menendez may have been a tough dad but he didn’t deserve to be falsely accused of being an incestuous perverted pedophile and rapist. I agree with you completely, Pamela Swift. Everything they said is a lie. The entire first trial was a sham and I can’t believe so many people fell for their lies and acting and these two murderers almost walked because of it! And they continue to lie because they still want people to feel sorry for them. I believe they had an idyllic life, not only because of the wealth and privilege, but because I truly believe their parents were kind, caring parents who just made the mistake of giving these two brats way too much in life and making life way too easy for them. Lala, they didn’t leave because they weren’t being abused in any way, the entire abuse story is nothing but a big fat disgusting lie. That’s why there was absolutely no mention of anything even remotely relating to them being abused till just a few weeks before the first trial started. If their parents were ever mean to them it was only after Erik and Lyle behaved badly and got in trouble. I believe all their parents did was tell them they were unworthy and big disappointments, and I don’t see that as abuse, because their parents were stressed out and understandably upset that their kids were so rude and disrespectful to them and their kids were doing things like cheating in school, stealing, spending excessive amounts of money, and having no sense of responsibility. There were never sexually, physically, and psychologically abused. That was all big fat lies. As for emotional and verbal abuse, that was highly exaggerated. Perhaps their parents yelled at and berated them, told them were embarrassments, but only after the boys did things like get into trouble and to give their parents a lot of stress. Something is seriously wrong with that Tammi woman…she’s stupid and dumb beyond words. She said that she was attracted to Erik when she watched him in the first trial, but she didn’t really believe the testimonies he and his brother gave and she seriously doubted they were abused. But she started corresponding with him because she thought he was “cute” or whatever…then some years later she found out that her husband was allegedly molesting her daughter and the guy killed himself…then she “reached out” to Erik again. The entire story with her is real fishy, and it’s obvious Erik is playing her like a fiddle. I wonder if her husband really molested her daughter, and she fell for Erik’s lies after that because she was vulnerable, or if her husband was falsely accused, and it was because Erik had filled her head with lies and she ruined her husband’s life because of him…either way it’s clear that she’s just been suckered in by all his lies and he’s manipulating her like putty. Sad because what she’s doing to her daughter is very messed up…to uproot her and move so she could be closer to the prison Erik lives in, and to make the little girl have a father/daughter relationship with Erik. Tammi is truly a messed up loser and moron and I feel so sorry for her daughter that her mother is nuts like that. I bet you now that her daughter is grown up she wants nothing to do with her nutcase mom. The simple fact is they hated their parents and killed them. There is no real evidence of abuse, other than the boys testimony. No one to dispute or confirm it – the only people who could are dead. I think the boys came up with this idea – probably from t.v. or jail, and were able to convince their defense attorney, Leslie Abrahmson just enough so she could present a zealous defense, but she can’t suborn perjury – meaning she cannot put on testimony she knows is false. So she has to believe it is possible, but more important she decides the brothers acted in self-defense which means whatever they say COULD be true unless the prosecution can produce direct evidence to the contrary. Who could deny it? The only two people who knew what went on behind closed doors…are dead. What is intersting is the maternal posture was really for the brothers, the jury too, but more important so they would communicate with her and she could give them the vigorous defense. All to keep them from death row (and make a big fee – ironically, she ended up with all the money).
I’m sure the parents were not perfect, I can see the father trying to drive his sons, and their mother took their fathers side – not only leaving the boys to stick together, but being abandoned by the maternal, nurturing parent. They got angry, lashed out and a childish fantasy of killing their parents and living off their wealth became a business plan. They justified the fantasy by convincing themselves they were in jeopardy, the parents were getting ready to cut them loose – financially, and maybe disinherited. As the brothers got older, I’m sure the pressure was enormous on them and they could never succeed at anything on their own. I would guess that somewhere along the way they decided that to be successful, you need to be ruthless, willing to do what the other guy won’t do…in this case it’s kill your parents, inherit the money and lifestyle and do what they want. It’s after they are caught that they make up a sexual abuse defense – it’s shocking! It’s undeniable! But they can ‘sell’ it because they stick together and had already turned off any empathy they had for their parents in order to kill them, so to claim sexual abuse was not that difficult. All they needed was 1 juror to believe them. It worked too – eventually they got life in prison which is good, they get to grow old under the ultimate control…prison.

But you have people on death row that were innocent of the crime that they have been convicted of only because they were railroaded. (NOT ALL, SOME) So, by your logic kill everyone and when people go into the cold case box and actually do the DNA and find out that it doesn’t match the person who has been convicted now the city and state is sued for murdering an innocent because of a “RUSH TO JUDGEMENT” to close a case and get a conviction. And quite a few people have been released because of DNA which they did not have years ago.

I was brought up in the south were “we had a village” that helped raise all of the kids in the neighborhood. If one parent saw you doing something they stopped you and took you to your parents. I guess being an Army Brat has its perks other than free housing and medical. It seems that without the backbone of real parents you don’t turn into real civilized adults. The BH kids do seem to get into more trouble than regular kids, is it because the parents are busy trying to be friends with their kids and NOT BEING REAL PARENTS?

Lyle fed Erik, his younger brother lies. He was a liar, and cheater both in his relationships, and work. Lyle was an arrogant shit, but Erik was suffering from severe problems early on (nothing to do with fantasy sexual abuse), but was led by his older brother, who happened to lie, and cheat, even through his school work which led to him being kicked out of Princeton. He was a master manipulator, and convinced his younger brother that his parents would set out to kill him. Lyle flamed the fire, and then, his younger brother, who opened up to his shrink, made the mistake of having someone with mental, emotional, instability listen in on their conversation. Lyle had a actual conscience, and did not know that after murdering his own parents he would be full of guilt (which contradicts the theory of sexual abuse). Lyle had no conscience, even in prison he cheats on girlfriends, wives, and he fooled the jury, but his crying in court, and over acting (this is coming from someone who has a Bachelors in theater, and M.A. in Criminal Psychology), was over the top, and fake. Most people cannot decipher a phony persona, and do not know when people are being sincere in their actions, or emotions.. Jose, was a hard working man, and may have been strict, but the only thing bad he ever did was want his children to make a name for the Menendez family. That was his crime. Lyle just wanted the easy way, and his personality traits prove he was Narcissist. He believed his own fantasy’s, and drove his own younger brother, who admired him to murder. Erik should be let go. Lyle, even in prison has no ethics or values, and growth, unlike his younger brother who was immature, and had emotional problems. Had Erik had another brother, he would not have committed this crime. The influence of his older brother, was worse then Jose’s. Now Erik, I do believe, is more mature, and sincere in his emotion. Lyle continues to be in denial, and has not even tried to make amends with his actions. The truth is this: Had Jose sexually molested his children, he would NOT have sent them to see a shrink. Even Ozeal stated that Kitty made a remark saying “we want them to tell you everything.” Jose would not have taken them to a shrink wanting them to confess all their problems, had they been sexually molested. Lyle was spending his daddy’s hard earned money a day after he killed him. His tears in court were tears for the fact that he had been caught. He made a threat to Ozeal, and unlike Erik, showed no interest in remorse. He believed all his life he was wronged because he father wanted the best from him. Lyle was a Sociopath, who manipulated his younger brother, who already had severe emotional problems.

I am very saddened with the outcome people hv chosen for Erik and Lyle.. Nobody could possibly understand the extreme shame,embarrassment and core shaking humiliation that comes with abuse. I remember laying awake many nights as a teenage girl,thinking of ways to escape,and yes,even kill my abusive parents. I am 46 now,and grateful I did not. However,I totally embody the extreme feeling of hatred,toward the ones I equally love . As a child,when the people whom are suppose to love n protect you,are the ones abusing you,it seems and feels there isn’t any other option. If the feeling of hopeless desperation becomes so overwhelming and unbearable,with no hope in sight,one starts to imagine their own escape. When children are being abused, that child, or children, become the business of everyone. As an adult,I know right from wrong,but I truly remember feeling there was no way out except eliminating my abusers…my parents. . So sorry Erik and Lyle..i hv been where you both were.
