I have never been one to agree on the what is popular or how the rankings go. As a mother of three boys, two who already went to college, I always come across emails or mailings soliciting to come to this school or that school. Here is how “they” rank the top schools.

1. Harvard
2. Princeton
3. Yale
4. MIT
5. Stanford
6. University of Pennsylvania
7. California Institute of Technology
8. Columbia University
9. Duke University
10. University of Chicago

Here are MY rankings of the top ten.

1. A college that gives and accepts scholarships.
2. A college with a reasonable dorm and meal plan.
3. A college where you can actually speak with a live person in the financial aid office.
4. A college that allows freshmen to have a car.
5. A college that looks at the overall character of the applicant and not just if mommy or daddy was alumni.
6. A college that doesn’t need a 5 page essay of begging to admit a student.
7. A college that doesn’t ask you to categorize your self on your application.
8. A college where my son is not the driving diversity force.
9. A college that is little and unknown but provides the same education.
10. A college that is not too far away to call mom and dad to the rescue.
