Inmates Deserve Social Contact for Rehabilitation Success Even Bernie Madoff
There has been a recent uprising of victims in regards to prisoner pen pal sites. Talks shows such as Anderson Cooper and Judge Judy have blasted certain online sites for being an outlet for inmates in which to be predators and commit fraud.
A few weeks ago, The USA Today printed an article with the design of speaking out for victims families and the outrage as the access inmates have to the outside world. The article was not flattering to the online sites, but in the broad spectrum of things, it backfired. The comments were on the majority side of the inmates and their need for contact and social skills.
As not to negate the suffering a victims’ family does behind a tragic crime, but once they feel justice has been served, why would they be stalking the perpetrator? Why would they become the center of their lives after the court has resolved the issue? Would that not just cause further pain and anguish for them?
Every one in prison is not there for a violent crime and not all are guilty of the crimes in which they have been convicted. The chances for rehabilitation are high when there is hope for a future. The ignorance of those who are way out of touch with a prisoner’s plight is always troubling. Until one has been confined in the system and away from outside contact can they truly understand the mental state for healing.
