An icon of a prison closes April 1st of 2011 due to budget cuts and budget shortages in the State of Georgia. Formerly a men’s prison and converted to house women, Metro State Prison was home for Diagnostics, Mental Health, Pregnant women, Closed Security and those who wanted to be closer to their families in Metro Atlanta.Thousands of women have been through the gates of the prison and several of them have experienced it more than once. Women are not going to prison they way they were in the 90’s and the first decade of the new millennium. Maybe now is the time to fix the system altogether. For more on the story from 2011 click here.
